Step 1: Start the capture

Once you’ve opened VLC, go to the “Media” menu and select “Capture and Record.” Click on “Convert / Save” from the dropdown menu.

Step 2: Set up the settings for the capture

Keep in mind that the frame rate is set to one frame per second by default, which could make the playback choppy. If you want a smoother recording, raise the frame rate. Click the “Convert / Save” button when you’re happy with the frame rate.

Step 3: Pick a destination and some options

Choose the file where you want to save your recording in the “Destination” field. You can see your desktop in the VLC window while recording by checking the “Display the output” box. However, you don’t have to do this. Click the edit button next to the Profile box to change the video codec and resolution.

You can also choose an existing profile from the box that says “Profile” and use it as is.

Step 4: Change the resolution

You can change the resolution by going to the “Video codec” tab and making changes in the “Resolution” section. In the Scale box, type 0.5 if you want to record at half the resolution of your desktop.

5. Begin to record.

Once you’re done setting your preferences, click the Save button and then the Start button. After that, VLC will start “streaming” your desktop to the chosen file. You can still use your computer normally during this process. Click the Stop button when you’re done recording.

You can watch your desktop recording when you open the saved file. You are free to share this file, use it however you like, or put it on YouTube.
